Last day for withdrawal: FEB 28.   FINAL EXAM WED MAY 7,    7-9AM

Expect modifications to the above schedule. We may not finish sections on the exact dates specified. Problems will be assigned throughout the course for each of the chapters or sections. Problems will be collected and graded. Read the assigned material and review notes before class.  Detailed assignment discussions will be posted on my website.  Work on the assigned problems as soon as possible (collaborate with other students on the problems but do your own work--do your own write up). Take thorough class and textbook notes. I suggest summarizing/condensing your notes to a few pages before each exam. The course lectures will follow the textbook closely (INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRODYNAMICS, 3rd edition, David J. Griffiths....which is noted as possibly the best textbook ever). YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SEEING ME WITH QUESTIONS IN TIME TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS (INCLUDING LEGIBLE CLEAR WRITE UP). I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE SEEKING OUT MY HELP WITH PROBLEMS! I expect you to ask questions in and out of class. I also expect you to study with each other.  For assistance please make use of office hours. You may also call me at home for help (not too late....I'm in the phone book).  If you have difficulty finding overlap of your schedule with mine, feel free to discuss (by phone or email if needed) times that are convenient to you. I will attempt to find times that are convenient to you.

I WILL NOT ANSWER QUESTIONS DURING THE PERIOD 24 HOURS PRIOR TO DUE.  YOUR WORK SHOULD NOT BE LAST MINUTE.  NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Tests/Final Exam: Two tests will be given throughout the course. The tests will be graded out of 100 points. The final exam will count as 2 tests (200 points total) and will cover material from the entire course. The tests and final exam will comprise 60% of your course grade. (The remaining portion is homework assignments). The format for the exams will be discussed in class. A single exam may have both an in class and take home portion. NO DROP SCORES.

Homework Problems: Begin working on the assigned problems as soon as possible. You will have ample time to complete, but only if you start when assigned.   Discuss problems with other students! The work you hand in should be written up on your own. Write up the problems carefully and legibly. Write ups should include a clear statement of the problem as well as the solution and specific conditions or assumptions. Make clear and correctly written mathematical and English statements as needed. Homework must be handed in on time. Please start each new problem on a clean new sheet of paper.  As a starting point for your homework problems, you should have essentially correct solutions for most of the problems (there may be one or two stumpers in each set, but you must understand the rest). You can guarantee this by starting work early, and asking questions of me or your classmates. This leaves a substantial portion of the homework grade to be determined by how well you have written up and explained the solution and the steps you take. Be complete. Use paper as needed. Interaction with classmates and myself should ensure that all problems are correctly set up and completed. While you may use resources like MAPLE (OR OTHERS) TO ASSIST WITH AN INTEGRATION, I do expect to see all needed pen and paper setup and simplification.  You need to know how to do the math.  I may give in class reading quizzes which will count (problem for problem) as the equivalent of a hw problem. So keep up with the reading.

Course Grades: The homework is 40% of the course grade. The tests and final comprise the remaining 60% of the grade.

fraction of course points = 0.60x{(Test Total ) +(Final )}/400 + 0.40x(fraction of hw points).

Tests are out of 100 points each
Final is 200 points
Each homework problem assigned will be given equal weight unless otherwise stated..

Grades will be no less than:
A if 90 % or better
B if 80 %
C if 70 %
D if 60%
F if less than 60%

If you are unable to attend classes you should get notes from classmates. You are responsible for all material, assignments, tests, etc. See the College attendance policy. Make-ups for work missed will be scheduled individually, but only for acceptable reasons. Notify me beforehand if possible.

If changes in the above policies or schedule become necessary you will be notified in class. It is your responsibility to make sure that you take note of any such changes.
