Homework: Problems will be assigned for each of the chapters. Each problem will be given equal weight. The assignments should be completed as soon as possible as we go through material. I will give due dates in class on a daily basis (some problems may be due almost every class day). Homework solutions will be discussed in class as we review the material. Read the assigned material and review notes before class. Take thorough class and textbook notes. I suggest summarizing/condensing your notes to a few pages before each exam. The course will focus largely on problem solutions. Late homework will not be accepted.
Some sections of each chapter may be skipped altogether, though reading and comprehension are expected. You may be asked to read other sections that I will not lecture on in class (you are responsible for that material).
Tests/Final Exam: Three exams will be given in class
on dates approximately corresponding to completion of one fourth, one half, and three
fourths of the semester (near the weeks of sept. 20, oct. 18 and nov. 15). These
will be on problems that are similar to homework problems that you have completed in the
class. The exams may be open note (not book). A comprehensive final exam
will be given that will count as two tests.
The homework portion of the grade will be 50% of your course grade. The tests and final exam will make up the remaining 50% of the course grade.
I will allow for limited extra credit material to be completed for each student by completing extra problems from our textbook. Such problems must be pre-arranged with me. You must prepare solutions for the class and present the problem. This must be done while we are covering chapter material (can't do ch. 2 problems three weeks after I have lectured on it). Completed solutions will add one or two points (depending on difficulty) to your overall test and final score (added to the 500 total points). Availability will be limited at my discretion, and limited to a maximum of 20 points (maybe less). It is up to students to seek out this opportunity. Students will not be able to complete more than one or two problems in any given chapter for this extra credit.
Grades will be no less than:
A if 90 % or better
B if 80 % "
C if 70 % "
D if 60% "
F if less than 60%
If you are unable to attend classes you should get notes from
classmates. You are responsible for all material, assignments, tests, etc. See the College
attendance policy. Makeups for work missed will be scheduled individually, but only for
acceptable reasons. Notify me beforehand if possible. For any further questions or
clarification on policies see me, become familiar with the Department of chemistry and
physics policies concerning student responsibilities (posted throughout the building), and
policies discussed in the current Augusta College catalogue.
If changes in the above policies or schedule become necessary
you will be notified in class. It is your responsibility to make sure that you take note
of any such changes.
