Last day for Withdrawal from course: Oct. 9
Final Exam: Wed. Dec. 10th 7:00AM

STUDY TIPS AND RESOURCES:  Problems will be assigned throughout the course for each of the chapters. You must read the assigned material before class lectures on each topic.   You should be working with each other on homework assignments to make sure that you understand all problems.   I encourage you to contact me to discuss any of the assigned work in the class (hw, exams, labs).   Our textbook is Essentials of Modern Physics by T.R. Sandin.

TESTS AND FINAL: Three tests will be given.   These may be either in class or take home exams or a mixed portion of each (I will let you know).  The tests will be graded out of 100 points. The final exam will count as 2 tests and will cover material from the entire course.   I will try to make sure that you have sufficient time to take exams and that they do not interfere with your other physics courses.

LABS: Handouts will be given either prior to lab or in lab itself. You will need to keep a lab notebook and to write up formal lab reports (or similar activities).  I will discuss how to write up the labs and how to handle error analysis.  You are encouraged to consult with me regarding formatting and content questions you may have. A suitable time to meet for short lab lectures will be agreed upon by the class. The actual completion of lab. assignments will be done on an independent basis. You should use a notebook (I will elaborate on this) for keeping a record of what is done in lab. This record should be very complete and include all data taken, conditions in the lab., equipment used, dates, etc. ... any information required to precisely reproduce the experiment.  In addition a rough outline of any analysis should be included in your lab notebooks.  A detailed write-up / lab. report  (or similar activities) will be performed for each of the labs.  You will be given instructions as to how to prepare these.  The most significant portion to these "formal" write-ups is the discussion of experimental uncertainties.   You will be given a minimum set of laboratory tasks to perform for each experiment. You may (and should) consider asking additional questions, and performing additional tasks appropriate to these labs (investigate).   The lab portion of your grade is 20% of the course.   For some labs where we may not have appropriate equipment I may assign simulation activities.

Homework: Assignments will be collected at the specified due date. Late assignments will be considered only in the event of emergency. If we have reviewed the assigned material before work is turned in, the grade will be penalized. Each problem throughout the course will be given equal weight. The homework assignments will comprise 30% of the course grade. You may work on or discuss assignments with other students (or with me) but the work you hand in must be your own!

Course Grades:
50% of the total grade will come from your test average.
20% of the total grade will come from your average lab score.
30%   of the total grade will come from your homework average.
Grades will be no less than:
A if 90 % or better
B if 80 %
C if 70 %
D if 60%
F if less than 60%

If you are unable to attend classes you should get notes from classmates. You are responsible for all material, assignments, tests, etc. See the College attendance policy. Attendance may be taken at the start of the period. Excessive absence or tardiness may result in your being withdrawn or receiving a failing grade in the course. Ultimately it is the students responsibility to make sure that the proper paper work has been handed in by midterm in order to ensure withdrawal. Failure to handle this properly may result in receiving a failing grade in the course. Make ups for work missed will be scheduled individually, but only for acceptable reasons.YOU MUST notify me beforehand if possible. For any further questions or clarification on policies see me, become familiar with the Department of chemistry and physics policies concerning student responsibilities (posted throughout the building), and policies discussed in the most recent Augusta College catalogue.

If changes in the above policies or schedule become necessary you will be notified in class. It is your responsibility to make sure that you take note of any such changes.
